Special Interest Brown Bag

Sponsored by Information Services/Information Technology Network
Friday, November 21, Noon EST
Cloud Computing
Moderator: Thomas Howe, Enterprise Sales Manager, Google

Abstract:  In his book "The Big Switch" author Nick Carr states "A hundred years ago, companies stopped generating their own power with steam engines and plugged into the newly built electric grid. This transformation had commercial and social ramifications that are impossible to overstate. Electric Light altered the rhythms of life, electric assembly lines redefined industry and electric appliances brought the industrial revolution into the home.  The change was so fundamental that it became almost impossible for us to imagine what life was like before electricity began to flow through the sockets in our walls."

"Today, a similar revolution is under way. Hooked up to the Internet's global computing grid, massive information-processing plants have begun pumping data and software code into our homes and businesses. This time, it's computing that's turning into a utility.  Cheap utility supplied computing will ultimately change society as profoundly as cheap electricity did."

In our talk on Cloud Computing, we will cover:
1) What has made it possible?
2) How is it different from the service bureaus and application service providers (ASPs) of the past?
3) Why do it?
4) How can you continue to leverage your existing investments in legacy technologies?
5) The risks of moving to the cloud
6) The benefits
